Cellar Favorite: 2014 Petrus

The 2014 Petrus is a wine I tasted en primeur but that I then missed during my in-bottle tastings for some reason. I was delighted to have this opportunity to rectify that. The 2014 growing season was uneven. Protracted periods of rain, cloudy skies and cool weather during the summer were less than optimal. Sunshine and warm, dry weather finally arrived at the end of the summer, perhaps a bit too late for some spots. Where rain was less heavy, the September push helped ripen the fruit, which is why this vintage is especially strong in the very northern Médoc. Results elsewhere are mixed.

Now, at nearly 12 years of age, the 2014 Petrus is in great shape. The aromatics alone are mesmerizing. Crushed blue-toned fruit, spice, mocha, lavender, new leather and licorice soar from the glass. The 2014 is a decidedly understated Petrus, a wine with an almost Burgundian sense of structure, for lack of a better term. That sensuality makes the 2014 quite approachable today, even though the aromas and flavors are still quite vibrant and not very developed. The 2014 is not likely to join the ranks of the most ageworthy wines at this address, but it should drink well for another 20 years, likely more. Today, the 2014 shows a very interesting and restrained dimension of Petrus. 95/Drink 2026-2046.
