Mas Jullien: A Languedoc Tale

France, featured

Antonio Galloni, Apr 2026

Olivier Jullien is one of the trailblazers in the Languedoc. Jullien founded his domaine in 1985 with just three hectares of vineyards. At the time, Languedoc was known mostly for turning out volumes of largely undistinguished wines. But Jullien had a different vision, a vision of an estate focused on sustainable farming, low yields and minimalist winemaking. It was a radical departure from the world Jullien grew up in, where vignerons like his father sold grapes to the local cooperative. This collection of mini-verticals back to 1989 provided a terrific opportunity to taste new releases as well as revisit many older vintages

Verticals & Retrospectives, featured, Australia

Angus Hughson, Mar 2026

Questions of genuine longevity often hang over wines from the New World. A recent full vertical tasting of Vasse Felix’s Tom Cullity, partially made with fruit from Margaret River’s oldest vines, beautifully displayed not only the ageability but also the growing confidence and stature of Margaret River’s leading Cabernet Sauvignons.

Ferrando: The Essence of Carema

featured, Italy: Piedmont

Antonio Galloni, Mar 2026

Nebbiolo is such a beguiling, complex, mysteriously beautiful grape. In Carema’s best sites, the indigenous biotype of Nebbiolo known as Picotendro yields wines like no other—aromatic, structured reds that capture the essence of place and vintage. The Ferrando family has turned out compelling wines here since the 1960s, wines that define what Carema is all about. Two recent vertical tastings provided an incredible opportunity to survey Ferrando’s wines all the way back to 1964, prior to the creation of the Carema DOC.

Michel Rolland Remembered

Antonio Galloni, Mar 2026

Everyone who loves wine, and everyone who works in wine or in a related field, owes Michel Rolland a tremendous debt of gratitude for his life’s work. Some people gain influence because of their accomplishments, but a few others completely reshape the landscape of their industry. Michel Rolland falls squarely into the latter category.

Alsace 2024: A Rainy Year of Svelte Beauties

featured, France: Alsace

Anne Krebiehl MW, Mar 2026

Like elsewhere in France, excessive rain was a key feature of the 2024 vintage in Alsace, spelling disease pressure and lower yields. But winemakers who stayed on top of their vineyard work delivered remarkable collections. The 2024 Rieslings are strikingly svelte, crystalline and whip-smart. Pinot Gris comes with much clarity, while Gewurztraminer is on a more slender footing. The 2023 Pinot Noirs are simply exquisite. Apart from renowned specialists, few made late-harvest or nobly sweet wines.

Another January, another blind tasting at Southwold. This year's edition shone a light on the lauded 2022 Bordeaux vintage. As usual, there were surprises, controversies and thankfully, a batch of spectacular wines that will require patience.

Two Sides of the Same Coin: 2023 and 2024 Rosso di Montalcino

featured, Italy: Tuscany

Eric Guido, Mar 2026

Montalcino’s 2023 and 2024 vintages are a study in extremes. Two thousand twenty-three brought severe yield reductions but wines of serious finesse. The elegant, energetic 2024s coincided with the first major expansion of Rosso di Montalcino production in decades. Together, the two vintages demonstrate that rigorous selection and progressive cellar management are the only paths to success in challenging growing seasons.

2023 Bordeaux: Signed, Sealed, Delivered

featured, France: Bordeaux

Antonio Galloni, Mar 2026

Bordeaux’s bottled 2023s enter the world during an especially volatile time. I say “enter” because over the last decade or so, the market for Bordeaux wines has changed radically. En primeur is relevant only for a few dozen wines that might appreciate significantly from the time they are first offered from barrel. That applies to fewer and fewer wines with each passing vintage. For all other properties, which means the overwhelming majority, the real market is the market for bottled, finished wines.
