Cellar Favorite: 1982 & 2001 Haut-Bages Libéral
France: Bordeaux, Cellar Favorites
Nov 2024
,The 1982 vintage in Bordeaux was a pivotal moment for Bordeaux—the touchpaper that moved the region into the modern age.
Bordeaux 2020 – The Southwold Tasting
France: Bordeaux, featured
Nov 2024
,The 2020 growing season rests in a surreal haze of upturned history, so I was naturally intrigued to see how the wines would show when it was 2020’s turn for the annual Southwold tasting in January.
Cellar Favorite: 1990 Bruno Giacosa Barbaresco Riserva Asili
Cellar Favorites, cellar favorite
Nov 2024
,I rarely write about Italian wine. But I was so enraptured by one bottle that had been purchased upon release that it would be rude not to write about it.
Cellar Favorite: 1945 Troplong Mondot
France: Bordeaux, Cellar Favorites, cellar favorite
Nov 2024
,Best vintage of the 20th century? 1945. Few will argue against that. A one-off historical nexus of victory against evil with victory in the vineyard.
Herding Cats: Burgfest 2020 – The Reds
France: Burgundy, featured
Oct 2024
,Burgundy covets caprice. Tasters, critics and even winemakers can only approximate how its wines evolve. Predicting Burgundy is like herding cats–it’s just a more enjoyable undertaking with less meowing.
Cellar Favorite: 1973 Californian Cabernets
United States: California, Cellar Favorites, cellar favorite
Oct 2024
,A recent discussion about 1970s California wine on the Vinous forum prompted me to cleave away a couple of tasting notes from my round-up of mature wines.
Vinous Table: Grouse Club @ Bouchon Racine, London, UK
United Kingdom, Vinous Table
Oct 2024
,The 7th edition of Grouse Club was over. Bouchon Racine continues to serve outstanding Lyonnais-inspired dishes and attracts gourmands from afar.
Royal Tokaji Company: 2018 New Releases
featured, Hungary
Oct 2024
,The Royal Tokaji Company hailed 2018 as a “Royal Flush”, the first where every single vineyard produced a 6-Puttonyos. Are they bluffing? Or is it the real deal?
Cellar Favorite: 1990 Henschke Lenswood Abbotts Prayer Vineyard
Cellar Favorites, Australia, cellar favorite
Oct 2024
,The 1990 Lenswood Abbotts Prayer Vineyard from Henschke is a rare old bird. I found little information on this wine, even from Henschke’s website, except that the vineyard was a majority Cabernet Sauvignon with the remainder Merlot.
Vinous Table: Cornus, London, UK
United Kingdom, Vinous Table
Oct 2024
,Cornus has hit the ground running. It was a pleasure to see familiar faces, including co-owner David O’Connor. It is a place for a special meal, though, at the time of writing, a three-course lunch for £55 per person means Cornus does not price itself out of many people’s pockets. The standard of cooking is amongst the best I have encountered this year. The wine list is enticing. Service is impeccable.
